Military ID Policy Changes

- 4/16/2015

All – Military installations are starting to enforce the requirement that military ID cards not have social security numbers. Many retirees and reservists still have cards with their socials if they were issued before 2013. Installations are starting to confiscate such cards on sight. Also, many installations are implementing ID card readers at entrance guard posts—which will not accept cards with socials for installation access. Members who have acceptable cards (without social) will soon have to register their cards for continued base access at many installations—e.g., Fort Myer plans to start registering retiree cards in May. If you still have a card with a social, I recommend you get it replaced ASAP before it is confiscated or no longer affords you base access.

For those at the National Office, the Washington Navy Yard has an ID office that issues reserve and retiree cards (many—e.g., Fort McNair—do not issue reserve or retiree cards). WNY also allows members to make advance appointments so they do not wait in line. Fort Myer issues reserve and retiree cards, but does not make appointments now.
